District councils eagerly look forward to working with the new Government to continue transforming our communities, economies and local public services.

Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen, Chairman of the District Councils’ Network, said:

“We congratulate the new Prime Minister on his General Election victory and look forward to working with him, Angela Rayner, Secretaries of State and ministers across the Government.

“District councils of all political leanings and in all parts of the country are enthusiastic about continuing our work with Government on bringing about changes that will benefit our communities.

“District councils are England’s most localised principal authorities. This gives us street-by-street knowledge of our communities and a unique ability to reach every person and business within them.

“Many previous governments have found that policies conceived from upon high do not necessarily translate into success on the ground. A partnership between central government and district councils is pivotal, with our local knowledge and proven expertise, is essential to bring results at pace for the 19 million people who live in our areas. We look forward to discussing with ministers how we can together make the greatest impact.

“We want to continue to drive change locally in genuine collaboration and partnership with central government, based on mutual trust and respect. We want to be your partner of choice in reimagining services from the bottom up and rooting them in real places. We want you to empower us with much greater autonomy to deliver excellent services for the people we jointly serve and make quick, tangible progress on national priorities.”

DCN has set out our offer to the incoming government in Closer to Communities: The district council prospectus for transforming local places. This gives practical suggestions for how a partnership between the Government and district councils can continue our work to help:

  • Build many more homes and drive down homelessness
  • Reduce pressure on the NHS and improve public health
  • Deliver jobs and sustainable, inclusive growth
  • Cut carbon emissions, tackle fuel poverty and grow the green economy
  • Ensure that investment transforms local places.

The District Councils’ Network represents 169 councils across England. District councils are the most numerous constituent part of the Local Government Association.
