District Councils’ Network responses to HCLG committee report on net zero
Responding to a report by the HCLG committee calling for councils to be given the powers to play a greater role in achieving net zero, Cllr Dan Humphreys, District Councils’ Network spokesperson for Enhancing Quality of Life said:
“As this report rightly highlights, district councils and others in local government have a vital role to play in achieving net zero.
“Districts are at heart of their local communities and are best placed to encourage greater sustainability in their areas to ensure a greener future.
“As we have said in this report we need the delivery framework called for to foster those changes. We need the certainty and clarity a framework would bring. This, along with sustainable and sufficient funding, will allow us to plan for the long term to achieve net zero.
“We were pleased to see a commitment to building clearer partnerships with local government and resourcing within the recent Net Zero Strategy but we need these actions taken forward as a matter of urgency, and look forward to engaging all key Departments on this after COP26.
“We also welcome the call for net zero to be given a central role in the planning process. Planning laws must also change to ensure councils can insist on green infrastructure in new developments.”
