District Councils’ Network responds to the Fairer Private Rented Sector White Paper

Responding to today’s publication of the Renters Reform Bill White Paper, District Councils’ Network Chairman Cllr Sam Chapman-Allen said:

“We’re very pleased to see the White Paper for the Renters Reform Bill published, having identified the need for these changes for some time, given the experiences of our housing teams on the ground.

“We believe in directly empowering residents and therefore welcome the implementation of the Decent Homes Standard within the private sector.

“Our members know the value of stable and secure communities in which residents feel secure and happy in their homes so we therefore very much welcome the proposed ban on no-fault evictions – something we’ve long sought.

“A private rented sector which offers security for tenants has a huge role in preventing homelessness and the other problems resulting from housing pressures around the country which councils’ prevention teams are seeking to tackle.

“We do understand that many private landlords will have concerns on these proposals, and we must look to ensure that they feel as comfortable as possible in retaining their properties for rental. We’re therefore pleased to see that further clarity and support for landlords will be forthcoming. We would like to make an offer to help develop these proposals, working in the interests of both responsible landlords and tenants, and look forward to continuing our work with responsible landlords to instil the confidence they need to rent out their properties.”
